Prices of various types of rice around the U.S.?

What's the average price right now for various types of rice around the country? I'm especially trying to get a feel for the per-pound cost for 50-lb. bags of brown rice, which I much prefer over any other variety and I hope to make as large a purchase as possible in the next couple days.

Any prices from the Midwest would be especially helpful.

Don't remember what we paid at Sam's for the last 100# we bought, but we just paid $14.99 for jasmine rice at an Asian market in Columbus just off Rt 315 on Bethel Rd. there was another brand of jasmine for $15.99. We bought the lower price, there was also more if it in the store than the other brand. These were not 50# bags either they were 20#. So, we did come home with a car full of food from there.

BTW, welcome to GIM. I live in Southern Ohio - Ross Co.

nickelless ~ I understand brown rice goes rancid fairly quickly, so unless you eat a lot of it, best to stick to white.

Where abouts on the flood plain are you? I'm close to Greenup, KY....

Thanks for the heads-up on the rancidness, Beercritic. I guess the many other complements to rice that I'm storing up will help compensate for the relatively low nutrition in white rice. I'm dehydrating cases of vegetables such as spinach and other greens, diced tomatoes, onions, etc., plus large quantities of all varieties of beans, esp. pinto beans, lentils, Great Northern beans and red kidney beans.

How much of a problem is there with other strains of rice going rancid?

I'm hopefully staying above the floodline on the shores of the former Yellow Banks, KY--now known as Owensboro. Looks like you're on the edge of the Appalachians.

I've got brown jasmine rice I've been using for over 18 months, and the only precaution I've taken is to put it in an airtight plastic container--no O2 purging, no sealing no low temperatures--and it's just as tasty today as when I got it.

Nickelless ~ Properly stored (no light, heat, or oxygen) white rice should store for years (decades?) Try some white Jasmine to see if you like the variety. Yep, I'm at the edge of the Appalachians, and birthplace of the toothbrush. *

Unclad Lad ~ I've never had such luck with the brown rice... Is the Jasmine brown much different from the regular brown? Also, sensitivity of various forms of rancidity do vary from person to person.

* If it were invented elsewhere, it'd have been called the "teethbrush."

The price of rice in Denver.

Prices are crossed out and new ones penciled in at the Pacific Ocean International Supermarket as the Asian grocer tries to keep up with the rising cost of rice. Thai jasmine rice nearly doubled in the past month.

Here in Phoenix, 25 lb bag of jasmine rice $22 at Smart & Final. Limit was 3 bags, but I only saw 2 on the shelf.
